Showing a Strong Hand After an Overcall - 2008/03/08 20:20 Definitely a rather elimentry question.... BUT, so far in 2 different tournaments lately, I have had about 18+/- points.

The bids have been w-1D, N-P, E-1H S-??? (16+pts unbalanced hand) and this one against 2 LMs: W-2D, N-P, E-2 S(said some keycard thing???), S-???(17pts Club-A, Hearts-AKQJ9),S-J10X, Dia-QJxx).... On first I went with a jumpshift and the 2d with a double, W-3D, pass out which was way wrong with even setting each by 2 we had bottom boards.

I have looked in 2 different basic manuals indicating a que bid as a way and a jump shift but these are without adding conventions. I as others play ques and jump shifts as limit or light as I have been taught. I have noticed that we have not added anything to our overcall bidding system so this is a void needing to be filled.

Wife and I are just adding Michaels to our standard american plus stayman, Jacobys, TX, takeout and responsives, gerber, blackwood.

Would someone please advise?

Re:Showing a Strong Hand After an Overcall - 2008/03/09 17:52 Me thinks I answered my question by searching on the net at bridgeaholics -- "I should have doubled and then bid my suit indicating 17+ points to my partner". Of course she wouldn't have known it either at the time but now we do. I/we know about the NT bids but this one eluded me.

If there is an alternate bid someone can suggest, I am definitely open to suggentions.

Re:Showing a Strong Hand After an Overcall - 2008/03/10 07:47 OleEd, it's great you saw the answer. I am sorry I wasn't here or I would have looked with you, but you seem to have managed great.

I will look into other options, but at the moment I don't know of any

Re:Showing a Strong Hand After an Overcall - 2009/09/20 07:07 With a big balanced hand between two bidding opponents it is usually best to pass, especially if RHO's bid was forcing (as in your examples). Bidding in the sandwich seat - see http://www.pattayabridge.com/conventions/Sandwich_seat.htm can be very dangerous as partner probably has nothing. With a shapely hand in the other two suits you can bid 1NT (Sandwich NT), 2NT (very shapely) or double (very strong).
