Negative and Penalty X. - 2009/07/14 06:55
First oif all, you need to establish the term 'negative double' as opposed to a take-out double. The negative (or Sputnik) double is very specific and occurs in just one situation. Partner opens, RHO overcalls and you double; this double is negative and most play that it simply shows any unbid major(s). After 1c and a 1d overcall, then a negative double shows 4-4 in the majors. After 1d and a 2c overcall then a negative double only guarantees one major. You have to agree to what level you play negative doubles, 2s and 3d are common.
