How to show strength in third seat - 2009/09/30 10:02 Hey guys,

I have been pondering some thoughts about showing strength in third seat. So after my partner opens one of a suit and my RHO doubles, 2 NT is Jordan 2 NT and shows 10+ points and 4+ trumps, while a redouble shows 10+ points and at most three trumps, preparing to possibly double for penalty. Then is it true that any other bid is weak? For instance, 1H-X-1S or 1H-X-2C are these both showing less than 10 points?

Also, if my partner opens one of a suit, my RHO overcalls 1 NT, and I double, I show 9+ HCP and the double is for penalty. I have always played that this is the only way to show strength, and any bid means I have at most 8 HCP. I was wondering if there was any convention I could use to show a fit for my partner if I have 9+ HCP and 4+ trumps for him, kind of like Jordan 2 NT. Thanks!

How to show strength in third seat - 2010/05/26 20:29 "Typically", one level bids over takeout doubles remain forcing and two level bids are weak. This is the way most folks fill out their convention card. Thus 1S over 1H-X would be forcing, similar to 1S directly over 1H, while 2C over 1H-X would be weak and natural.

(However, many players use 2C artificially in that situation, as sort of a constructive heart raise, reserving 2H for a weaker heart raise.)

I agree with your treatment of the double of 1NT overcall as being for penalty. If you preferred to make a constructive call in such a situation, rather than a penalty double, you could bid 2NT. Intuitively, the 2NT call cannot be natural because with a balanced hand of around 11 HCP you would surely double the 1NT overcall. Hence, the 2NT call must be conventional force.

There is a little neat book on this very topic titled "Cappelletti over One-of-a-Major Doubled (C/1mx)" by Mike Cappelletti (yas, that Cappelletti !) - your bridge club might have a copy.

In a nutshell: after 1M - (DBL):
1NT= Transfer to 2C
2C = Transfer to 2D
2D = Transfer to 2H (for 1S opening)
2M-1=Good raise
2M = bad raise

read the book to see the beauty of this simple convention!
