Strength and support, but no new suit to bid. - 2010/06/16 18:06 Probably a question that has been asked many times, but so specific I haven't been able to find the answer. Partner has opened 1H. I hold: S:AQ9, H:KQJ4, D:QJ7, C:J76. I'm learning very basic/standard 5 card major, weak 2 bids, etc. How do I respond? Too strong to raise to 2H or 3H, not enough length for 4H preempt. 4 card major precludes 3NT, so I'm looking to bid a new suit, but none are "biddable" by the "4 card minimum" that has been suggested in the online lesson program I'm taking. What to do?

Strength and support, but no new suit to bid. - 2010/09/24 05:48 You need a bid that show support+ forcing to game.

Your system basically need to cater 4 type of "support": weak, simple (constructive), limit and strong.

Say raise 2H for simple raise, 3H for weak, 2NT for invite and 2S for fit strong (You don't usually need 2S bid - if responder have long weak spade, just bid 1S and rebid 2S - so 1H-2S can be used for your type of hand: support major but no other good suit to show) - For Spade: 2S=simple,3S/4S=weak, 2NT invite fit and 3H for strong but fit.

Say even you hv 4 cards C but like this:
S:AQ9, H:KQJ4, D:KQ, C:6543
if you bid 2C and it happen partner has Q872 you can end up playing 5C with AK outside!! so with bad suit, it's better not to show it - you have a fit anyway.

Even better, combine with Bergen Raise to differentiate whether partner has 3 card support or 4+ card support (which make a different between game or partscore, or even 11 tricks or slam!)

See this article for further read on this very topic: http://www.7ntbyme.com/87/so-you-have-a-fit-make-sure-your-bid-can-communicate-these-4-types-of-fit/

Good luck !
