2 suit hand - 2010/09/24 05:31
This is the reasoning that it will not likely become 1S-P-P-P: Say your standard system is covering 12-21 or there after, then it requires partner with 5 count to not pass (this is a very important requirement in playing standard/natural system)
There are 24 point out there, statistically, the "par" of each player will have 8 points (24/3) - therefore partner will not pass (have more than 5HCP)
Say partner has only 4 HCP (so he/she can pass), meaning opponent have 20 HCP between them. The worst case: split 10-10. With 10count, the 4th person will likely to balance to protect partner have strong spade but cannot bid. Yes, if the 4th person have some length in Spade as well, say 5 card, then he will not be doing the balancing bid, but then the slam probably off anyway because of this.
So, in order to get pass-out you need all the following to happen: 1. partner has below than 5HCP 2. the rest of the point split 10-10 3. the 4th seat cannot or don't know how to balance
in short - it's only small chance that the bid will turn out 1S-P-P-P. Looking at the entropy (how you got some monster hand like that) - someone will have unbalance hand as well.
If you open 1S, partner with QJ doubleton will probably respond 1NT (if you play forcing NT) - with intention to pass your 2C or 2D rebid or correct/preference to 2S with doubleton honor. Then you need to rebid something that descriptive to your hand, say 6C. Partner need to imagine that your hand will be at least 6-6 with at least AK and KQ on each suit. So, with extra (e.g: QJ spade and Jxxx Club) partner can bid 7C, otherwise just choose the best between 6C or 6S.
Alternatively, if your 2C is game forcing (cannot pass until reach game) - or other Acol style strong opening (playing trick) would be more preferable (the one that not imply too many HCP), you can try it using that path with the risk of overbid.
For example: 2C-2H 2S-2NT 3C-3NT (partner probably singleton C, doubleton spade) 6C (no point doing RKC, you have double void) And this is the danger with opening strong : partner with 2 Aces will bid 7NT - in which opponent 10xxxx or J10xx in club for example become sure stopper.
This kind of hand (which is rare, btw) is the focal advantage using Natural/Standard system where the rebid is almost only limited by your imagination. (1S then rebid 6C probably item that you hardly discuss)
Good luck !
