Two ways to make the same bid - 2006/02/24 15:37 I am sure there are many situations when one can make the same bid now or after a transfer or relay is compleetd. The specific one that came up last night was; 1NT(15-17)-p-2NT(trans D) now my patrner can bid 3H or can wait until the transfer is copmleted and then bid 3H. I'm sure there are many similar auctions that come up from time to time.
Without discuss to people think one should be strong then the other?
Which one? If you did discuss it would agreements be any different?

Bidsding first time must be stronger. You does'nt know whewther RHO is going to progres & it is pretty dangerous to come in with beautifully anything but a pretty strong hand.

Once you have passed, if the transfer comes round to you, then, like any other protective position it is safer to bid with a weaker hand because partner is now marked with values.

re:Two ways to make the same bid - 2006/02/26 19:27 Oh I get it... (sorry whether I'm dumb)
Do you mean a 3h overcall?

I don't think it is the same since the 2NT bider can bid 3NT, 3S, 3H or whatever in the next round.
In direct position 3H shuold be a brave bid requesting badly a heart lead and hopiung they can't find a way to know if 3hx is better than a game.... After a 3d signoff by the 2NT bidder 3H should be more serious with expectations to make.
So IMO a direct 3H bid is weakish than a later 3H bid. But this is just a persoanl POV

If you read the question again I am sure the original poster was reffering to a 3H overcall over 2NT as against a protective 3H overcvall after the transfer is copmleted.

re:Two ways to make the same bid - 2006/02/27 17:07 You must bear in mind that whether you don't overcall with 3H now, you may not get a chacne to eg (1NT) p (2NT) p; (3D) p (3S). Also, RHO is still unlimited, so there is a risk of well being doulbved and going for a large number. This is a danger with most bids in the "sandweich" position.

I would thertefore say that waeker hands should wait, and if 3D comes round to you, then you can hazard 3H (but it is still risky)
