re:Simple Bidding Question - 2006/04/03 18:03
OK a zero is too harsh. But I still think it's 100% to bid game. Yes, sometimes you will be too high (on the hands you quote) but you will miss game on others: partner doesn't know that non-ace spade honours are bad and minor suit honours are good and you can't tell him without driving game.
I've made worse games than this, particularly vul at aggregate (or vul at imps) though I agree I'd probnably rather not be.
OK Game is odds against but it still has play. And that is a long way off into the tail of possible 1NT openings, even excluding 1NT openings that will accept an invitation.
Again I don't mind being in 4H at imps. And do you think partner is kindly going to pass on that hand and accept on
Axxx xxx KQx AQx ?
That's true, but you don't learn much more about whether the hands fit well by merrily bidding 2NT instead.
I play in England, where strong NT is quite rare. At imps, I gain so many game swings from bidding quickly to game after a strong NT opening that I find it's worth secondly doing so very agressively where at the other table they've bid 1m-1H-1NT say and the defence is better.
