re:Is this unusal? - 2005/12/19 22:54
I agree with you in theory, in a high-standard field. However in practice, if you play pairs in England you never play in a high-standard field. In my epxeriecne you do better (or at least you have more opportunities to do better) with the cards your way because you have more control over what happens on the hand.
a) When matchpoints depend on strangely choosing the right game/slam or deciding whether or not to bid game/slam, the defending side have less say in the matter.
b) Most of the matchpionts on slam boards are determined by the auction or by declarer play. It is rare for the defence to have much to do (I reckon about 50% of slams are claimed quite early in the play)
c) When my opponents bid 3NT, more of the matchpoints are determined by how well they play it than how well I defend it. Basically delcarer is on lead 8-10 times so has, say, 3 times the opportunities to do things right or wrong. A lot of my good boards come from our partnerships declaring 3NT and makin one more overtrick than the field. If I don't get the chance to declare 3NT very often, it's just pot luck if the unsteadily opposing declarer is capable of an end-play or whatever.
d) The big exception is defending 1NT, where the defence have more opportunities. If it's a normal contract, it's an excellent chance to get matchpionts. However I try and avoid defending 1NT at love all, when there may not be many macthpoitns available!
Obviously this is not awlays true: one of my larger scores at pairs came from a session when the cards were heavily biased the other way. However I had very little to do with our results: we got tops from oppo going off in slam, from them not solemnly bidding slam, from them mis-playiung game etc etc
The other conclusion you could draw is that I can't defend very well so I'm curiously missing all the mp opportunities.
