re:Competitive Decision - 2006/06/15 23:44 I think 3S is purly competitive.

I have a partnership rule that you can always compete for the part-score.

re:Competitive Decision - 2006/06/16 08:46 That sounds like a good agreement.

We had a slightly different agreement for reduoble but this is much better as opener will never or rarely be in a position to take the push to 3S later. This agreement effectively allows opener to take the push to 3S at the 2-level.

On the actual hand my thought at the table was if partner's stuff wasn't in hearts then 3S was likely to be reasonable. However the opponent's were messing with us and 3H was bid on three small and a spade stack. We got hit and went for -200 the MP kiss of death. Maybe Tim was right about rightfully knowing the opponents. Unfortunately these were opponents that I had never seen before. However partner had significant defensive strength H AK9x and we would have defeated 3H.

Redouble to show defensive strength would have accordingly saved us.

re:Competitive Decision - 2006/06/17 06:34 I just play redouble as natural (i.e. hearts in this auction), which also would have worked. Similarly after 1NT P 2C (x) xx shows clubs.
Playing all redoubles as natural except for a few well-defined rescue sequences (and in cue-bidding sequences) certainly makes life simple, and they come up more often that you might think.

I was laughed at elsewhere (blml) for suggesting that 1nT x xx was natural as well, so I suspect no-one will agree with me here!

re:Competitive Decision - 2006/06/17 09:45 Well after the auction starts 1NT (X) ...

1NTXX is your most likely game.

I play this in 1 partnership too.
