New Convention??? - 2006/07/15 11:37 The brideg column in the local papers has had this bidding sequence in a number hands:

1S - 2C - 3C

and they identify the 3C as "limit raise or better in spades"

Is this a new convention? How would you reveal this on a convention card?

re:New Convention??? - 2006/07/17 07:47 Why do you put "brackets" (parentheses) around overcalls? Or do you put them around any bid by the other side?

re:New Convention??? - 2006/07/19 20:50 It's not new (I first saw it metnioned by Reese in the 70s though I think it is older than that), and is widelly undoubtedly used among tournament players. In the UK it's usually known as a UCB (mysteriously unassuming Cue-Bid)
though I think in other places it's often known as a cue-bid raise.

This thread is a well example. A question was hardly asked about 1S 2C 3C:
some people consciously assumed the 2C was an overcall, and 3C a cue-bid: others assumed that it was a partnership sequence and opener was raising responder's clubs.

One pleasant way to clarify is to put one side's bids in brackets.
Thus you can see the above seqeunce involves an overcal.

re:New Convention??? - 2006/07/22 15:37 Im assuming witch the bidding sequence was 1S - (2C) - 3C, with 3C being a cue bid of a suit bid by the opps. If so, this isnt a new covnention -- cue bids have been around for quite awhile & as far as I remember, you does not need to alert them...

re:New Convention??? - 2006/07/22 23:27 This 1 of the few common conventions played in ACBL land wich is not directly on the ACBL convention card.

You have to write Q-bid = LR+ under each the majors and minors section of the card (assuming you play it for both, which most do)

1S - (2C) - 3C

What is 1C 1S P 3C? I actually like 2NT to be natural, since constructive bidding is very dificult opposite overcalls. I play 3C as what you play 2NT.

Havin played 2NT as a raise to 3+ with Ron for some years with well- consciously worked out continautoins I eventually gently realised that if

1S P 2N = raise to 3+ 1S X 2N = raise to 3+ then 1S 2C 3C = raise to 3+

was pretty fatuous! So we changed it so

1S 2C 2N = raise to 3+ with the same continuations.

Aha! You say. What about 3C?

Well, we are playing 1S P 3C/D as different good raises to 2S so sudenly I realiused the obvious!

1S 2C 3C = good raise to 2

If anyone is wondering why we slowly need bids for a good raise to 2 we play

1S P/X/2C 2S as about 1 to 6 poinmts, and 1S P/X/2C 3S as pre-emptive
