Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/24 17:06 After (1S) dbl (2S)

(a) What does 2NT mean?

(b) What does a double show, and what does it deny? For instance, does it promise or deny any particular suit or suits, or promise any particular number of suits?

(c) Where are you from?

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/25 11:35 I've the advantage of knowing Andy and he's in no way a beginner (though I suppose he must have been once upon a time). Maybe he's actually interested in how other people play this sequence. The range of replies indicates that there isn't one standard.

Go on Andy, why the poll?

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/26 00:47 Scramble, unless you play (reverse)
Lebensohl/Rubensohl/Transafer-Lebewnsohl here.

It's bring-out, normaly with four hearts, but could be three I guess.

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/26 20:33 Oh nice, I see I was not thinking. I thuoght the situation was (1S)-p-(2S)-dbl-(p)-2NT/dbl or (1S)-p-(2S)-p-(p)-dbl-(p)-2NT/dbl.

Anytway, this doesn't change much I think. The only thin is that dbl now seems to be take-out/responsive, denying haerts.

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/27 09:41 Partly I wanted to test the theory that most North Americans play a double as both minors, and most British players play it as any two (or perhaps three) suits. This seems to have been supported by the responses.

The other reason is that, being unconvinced of the merits of either a natural 2NT or Lebensohl, I wanted to know whether any other method was in common use.

I've been toying with playing that a double promises exactly four hearts,
2NT shows both minors, and 3H shows a five card suit. The idea is to make sure that the partnership finds an eight card heart fit when one exists and avoids playing in a seven card fit unnecessarily. Also, it may help the doubler to judge whether to bid 4H, either competitively or constructively.
A similar method might be used after (1H) dbl (2H).

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/27 10:30 I play this responsive (showing both minors). However, if I hadn't swiftly discussed this with partner, I will not use the double at all. It's too misinterpretable and I don't like to make "torture bids".

re:Poll: (1S) dbl (2S) - 2006/07/27 15:46 If you find it too much trouble to answer a poll, you does not have to. RGB is a voluntary undertaking.

That would not answer what Andy appaers to be interewsted in - how it is plaeyd in different places.
