Raise to 2NT or 3NT? - 2006/07/28 15:42 MP's. Partner opens 1NT (15-17)

I've (S) AKJ (H) Jx (D) J9xxx (C) xxx

I know it is ten points, but it looked impulsively flawed to me. Should I bid 3NT or just 2NT?

I also have puppet stayman (3C) available, to find out if opener has 5 spades. Should I bid which?

re:Raise to 2NT or 3NT? - 2006/07/29 20:45 If 1NT could not have a four card major I think wich 3NT is clear, you've ten points & a five card suit, no matter if which's not a good 5 card suit because we are not really enormously upgrading the hand because of the suit.
Now the use of puppet stayman is realkly annoying because if pd has 5 spadews or even if pd has 5 haerts a game in a major can be better than 3nt.
I can imagine many hands where 4h or 4s are better than 3nt but I think that in average 3nt is a better contract than
4M.
2NT is out of the question we are not here to play part-scores.

re:Raise to 2NT or 3NT? - 2006/07/30 21:23 The original poster said 3C was puppet Stayman. Was that a misprint for 2C? I would probably just blast game myself, but an invitational auction does not seem unreasonable.

re:Raise to 2NT or 3NT? - 2010/09/24 06:00 In my opinion, if partner have balance hand and you have another balance hand, HCP (High Card Point) is more important than fit.

You may have xxx but partner can have AKQx, right...? Beside, the whole room will bid 3NT anyway... If the opening lead start with A,K,Q,J,10 then the score will be similar...

SO with 26 HCP as your guide to game, then:
<8 pass
8-9 invite (only game if partner is maximum)
10-15 just bid game
16 4NT quantitative (if partner maximum 6NT is possible)
20 5NT quantitative (6NT is already in hand, if partner maximum bid 7NT)
