Change in non-vulnerable penalties--- history? - 2006/10/31 16:23
Could somebody supply a reference for the history leading up to the change from (100,300,500,700,900) to (100,300,500,800,1100)? I have heard this referred to as "the Marty Bergen rule", suggesting it was made largely in response to aggressive pre-emptive tactics he advocated at favorable vulnerability. It seems unlikely that a single player could have brought about such a major change, so I would like to know more about the deliberations that brought it about.
It seems to me that the change should have more of an impact at imp scoring than matchpoints. At the latter, down four against a vulnerable game was too much before the change. For a sacrifice against a vulnerable major-suit slam, down seven was a matchpoint profit under the old rules, down six under the new rules.
