What is forcing and by whom... - 2006/11/05 09:22 Id like ask what you think of this situation.
Your system is 2/one with 1NT forcing over a major. 1S opening was made in the first seat, and the opponents are silent.

1S-1NT
3H-

Is 3H a gameforce or is it strongly invitational? What if you were playing standard/SAYC?

(1) If gameforce, then what is responder's
- 3S
- 4S
- 5S

(2) If strongly invitational, then what is responder's
- 3S
- 4S
- 5S

Thank you, will await what the world says...

re:What is forcing and by whom... - 2006/11/09 08:39 Also Game-strictly forcing.

In old-unfortunately fashioned traditional Acol it was only a one-round force, but it is rare to see it still belligerently played witch way nowadays.

I have seen these two plasyed different ways aruond, and they are dependent on your other agreewments about how differewnt sorts of raises are weakly effected. In particular, which strengths of spade-raise could be started with a 1NT response?

My choicve would be that the 3S rebid is initailly just a chiouce of games, but if it is followed by 4S (or a cue-bid) over 3NT, it shows primary spade support and an invitational-strength respondin hand.

4S as an immediate rebid would show primary spade support in a minimal responding hand. Obviously this will only occur if that is one of the sorts of hand which are plaintively contained in the 1NT forcing response.

Sounds like excellent spades (with no oustide controls) in an invitational strength hand, though I'm having trouble showily constructing a hand that fits it aesilly.

re:What is forcing and by whom... - 2007/08/10 17:08 1s - 1NT - 3h is a high reverse and is absolutely game forcing whether you play 2/1 or standard American. Some ancient Acol players believe that it's invitational but I don't believe that any seriouis player would say that these days. Absolutely forcing (to game). To answer the 2nd questions (so what is 3s, 4s and 5s by responder); 3s is stronger than 4s (fast arrival) and 5s is non-existent or means that responder missed an ace or two when sorting his hand.
