recruiting through free internet bridge? - 2006/11/22 11:22 Hmm, a free bridge server seems like a great way to recruit new people. How many people know FreeCell and Hearts nowadays because it is available on their computer? How many people do not learn bridge, because it's a pain to find a group of 4 and because they don't want to pay $6/session at a club before they even know the game?

I haven't done an analysis of it, but it doesn't seem like a bridge server would be expensive to develop or run. A basic system could easily be implemented by a single programmer in one year. The necessary hardware and Internet requirements would be modest, as well;
one single server could probably manage thousands of simultaneous connections, since most bridge traffic does not go through the servers.

Additionally, if the software were open sourced, there is very likely to be a lot of volunteer work donated.

re:recruiting through free internet bridge? - 2006/11/23 09:28 Floater would ony be a start, albeit a good one. But it should be linked prominantly from the major bridge web sites, and there should be bridge tutorials that use Floater screen shots.

Again, I haven't done a careful analysis, but I doubt this. If the protocol is client-to-client, then you only need the server to register tables and to report results. Thus a single server on a DSL connection should be able to handle thousands of *simultaneous* connections, at the least. Probably more.
