recruiting through free internet bridge? - 2006/11/22 11:22
Hmm, a free bridge server seems like a great way to recruit new people. How many people know FreeCell and Hearts nowadays because it is available on their computer? How many people do not learn bridge, because it's a pain to find a group of 4 and because they don't want to pay $6/session at a club before they even know the game?
I haven't done an analysis of it, but it doesn't seem like a bridge server would be expensive to develop or run. A basic system could easily be implemented by a single programmer in one year. The necessary hardware and Internet requirements would be modest, as well; one single server could probably manage thousands of simultaneous connections, since most bridge traffic does not go through the servers.
Additionally, if the software were open sourced, there is very likely to be a lot of volunteer work donated.
