proposed replacement for senior events - 2007/01/19 14:26 (1) No explicit age restriction

(2) Call them "social" events, rather than "senior" events.

(3) Significantly more time per board, if necessary by drastically reducing boards per session.

(4) Serious restriction on systems/conventions allowed. Perhaps segregate sections for strong club users, weak notrump users.

(5) Perhaps a half-hour "chat break", with refreshments, in the middle of the session.

(6) Minimal masterpoint awards. The hope would be to reduce the acrimony level and discourage professional players.

re:proposed replacement for senior events - 2007/01/21 06:46 Didn't the ACBL allready set up, or consider setting up, a "casual bridge" division with minimal masterpoint awards, to try to encourage social players who doesn't like the serious atmosphere of duplicate to participate? What ever happened to it?

re:proposed replacement for senior events - 2007/01/22 02:07 Brigde is a social game. No reason to imply which only non-competitive game is social, nor to imply that only those who are unwilling/unable or otherwise do not want to keep up the pace, are social...

re:proposed replacement for senior events - 2007/01/22 20:30 I believe this proposal definitely has merit. A good example is the
Non-Life Master Tournament, which is such a pleasant experience. With
Master Points being used as a marketing tool we have reached the point where a significant number of our recent Life Masters don't know how to play Bridge and abandon the tournament circuit as soon as they get their "Gold". Due to the fixed structure of Classes the 300+ Master
Point players start out in C with an insufficient number of players to yield an award and are effectively playing in B. I recommend the ACBL institute a written test as a requirement for Life Master status.
Establish a rating system based on known ability and abandon Master
Points as a Class base. Establish Classes based on the actual tournament participants with a near equal number of players in each
Class. Lastly, abandon fueling Charity/Junior fundraisers with Master
Points. Let the people that can afford it support Charity/Junior fund raising with appropriate tax breaks. I'm sure Uncle Bill Gates and
Uncle Warren Buffet would sponsor some Junior Tournaments with
Scholarships if the appropriate T-Shirts were authorized. Let the
Clubs that have Juniors raise the money to send them to expense paid tournaments. Earl
