You be the judge - 2007/02/22 14:20 North hand: J9xx, AQxx, xxx, Qx
South hand: 108x, x, AKQ, AK109xx

N/S vul, auction as follows:

E S W N
2H X 4H 4S
P 5S X All pass

Suffice it to tell 5 spades doubled wasn't a rousing success.
Who's more at fault here--what's the worst call?

re:You be the judge - 2007/02/23 06:00 Double should'nt have been my first choice (3c) but it is not a terrible bid
IMO.
4s is indeed a bad bid with AQxx of hearts & a side queen & only four spades, the Law and common sense can be used to decide that passing 4hx is a better option than bidding
4s. If pd has a heart void and good values you have 0 offensive to bid 4s and will likely end up in a disaster because if pd has the right cards to win 4s his next bid won't be pass.
5s is also a bad bid, 4nt RKCB seems to be a better option

IMO South made two very doubtful bids (x,5s) while north made a really ugly bid (4s).
North 65% of the blame
South 35% of the blame

re:You be the judge - 2007/02/24 08:29 If N/S agree which South's hand should double 2S, then 100% N (4S)
Otherwise:
100% South (Double)
200% South (5S)

Remember, from North's point of view, 4S will probably make on the perfectly expected heart lead, with E/W makin 7+trikcs in hearts.

re:You be the judge - 2007/02/24 16:04 What would a double by North have meant?

If South wants to try for slam, what would 5H instead of 5S meant?

IMHO, both players were aggressive, but I don't think the bids were terrible.

re:You be the judge - 2007/02/24 18:03 Biddin 4S with the north hand is a crime. 5S is too much, when partner can only have four spades. 4H gotten you fixed. Stay fixed.
