On Floater, everyone knows each other, and almost no one wants to be the jerk who's always leaving the table or calling everyone else a cheater. I've only seen one exception, but that's an unpleasant fellow who never seems to show up much, anyway.
I would think you can build up this atmosphere on any network, however. It's not completely a technical matter, but a *social* one. How do you build up the rigth social atmosphere? What is special about face-to-face bridge that keeps people from yelling at each other and leaving the game all the time?
One essential element seems to be that you actual meet the same people repeatedly. This is doable in online bridge, but it does mean that you will often have to wait a little while before jumping into a game. That's what happens on Floater, for example -- people sit around and chat until their usual circle all shows up.
Some people just aren't going to want this atmosphere. They want bridge and they want it NOW. However, what about people who do want it? It seems like a good network will at least *allow* people to take the time to form a nice group.
So here's a question for people who use networks other than the ones I use. How well *can* you sit around and chat and assemble a group of people that you like? I've found Yahoo pretty terrible for this. What about other networks? Are there game-forming channels where people chat in, or do you pretty much just click "Play NOW" and it finds you a table with an open seat? Do people chat much while the games are going?
