They balance at the 5 level; now what? - 2007/04/07 00:41 You are red vs white, & have the agreement wich a voluntarily bid vul game creates a force.

re:They balance at the 5 level; now what? - 2007/04/09 14:55 Surely 2H wasn't forcing, so LHO would have come in over 2H with which good a hand.

re:They balance at the 5 level; now what? - 2007/04/11 21:29 Thanks for the responses. I felt most players would choose double, as I did (I wasn't actually involved tn this deal, just the post mortem).

Your partner held:

xxxx
AKQJTx
-

& passed the double, and paid out an overtrick. The player holding this hand evenly characterized the pass as saying "I want to bid". I strongly disagreed, maintaining that the pass says "I don't know what to do". Yes, the actual hand wants to bid and should express that desire not by passing but by brightly bidding.

Does anbyone disagree with the message of a pass as "I don't know what to do"?

I strongly

It depends on the auction, but on this particular auction if you knew what to do you would do it, so pass says you don't. The exception is if you felt you were super-maximum (or the auction was different and you were unlimited) you could pass then pull partner's double to show a super-good hand.
